Undergraduate students Hannah Negri, Jeffrey Johnson, Zoe Jackson Delos Angeles, and Jackson Arroyo presented posters, and Dr. Hamachi gave an oral presentation in the Primarily Undergraduate Nano Cooperative (PUNC) Symposium. We enjoyed getting to catch up with lab alumna Daisy Kamp, who is currently pursuing a PhD at UC Irvine with Elizabeth Lee.

In collaboration with Dr. Shanju Zhang at Cal Poly in the Chemistry and Biochemistry department, Dr. Hamachi coauthors an editorial article titled Editorial: Recent Advances in Sustainable Polymer Materials in Frontiers in Materials for the special issue titled Recent Advances in Sustainable Polymer Materials.

We are excited to announce that Dr. Trevor Harding at Cal Poly has been awarded an Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to purchase a new Scanning Electron Microscope. Dr. Hamachi is a co-PI on the grant. Read more about the grant here. A big thank you to the NSF. We can’t wait to use this new instrument to image our samples.

Welcome to two new students joining the Hamachi Group for winter quarter research: Ypatia Kondos (Polymers and Coatings MS) and Harkeerith Vij (Materials Engineering). We are excited to have you join the team.

Dr. Hamachi gave a special lecture on Quantum Dots for the ACS Club to explain the science behind the 2023 Chemistry Nobel Prize. Dr. Hamachi’s PhD work focused on Quantum Dot synthesis, and Dr. Louis Brus (one of the Nobel Prize recipients) was on her PhD Thesis Committee!

Check out the special “Quantum Dot Cookies” that Dr. Hamachi made as lecture snacks. The larger the cookie, the more red-shifted the M&M’s due to Quantum Confinement.

The lab surprised Dr. Hamachi with cake and a plant to celebrate Dr. Hamachi’s birthday. Thanks so much to the best lab group!

In honor of Halloween, the talented Olive Rosplock carved a pumpkin with the Hamachi Group logo.

Chemistry major Sachi Ottoes presented a poster on her work titled “2D COF Water-Based Latex Coatings” at the 36th Biennial Western Coatings Symposium in Las Vegas, NV. Congratulations to Sachi for winning first place in the undergraduate student poster competition! The Hamachi Group goes to the Spring 2022 American Chemical Society Meeting in San Diego, CA. Undergraduate students Dean Kim and Donna Tran presented posters, and André Lagron gave a talk on their research. Here are a few photos of us enjoying the conference:

Dr. Hamachi coauthors a publication in ACS Nanoscience Au on The Primarily Undergraduate Nanomaterials Cooperative: A New Model for Supporting Collaborative Research at Small Institutions on a National Scale, showcasing the newly formed Primarily Undergraduate Nano Cooperative (PUNC).

Senior chemistry major André Lagron gave an invited student talk and poster on their work titled “Recycling Isocyanurates via Dynamic Covalent Bonding.” Senior materials engineering major Alison Chew presented a poster on “Particle Size Control of Colloidally Synthesized COF-300 Pigments.” Congratulations to Alison for winning first place in the student poster competition! Thank you to WCS for the opportunity to present this work and to the William and Linda Frost Fund and the Golden Gate Society for Coatings Technology for helping fund this summer research!

The Hamachi Group welcomes 4th year Materials Engineering undergraduate student Hannah Martin and Polymers and Coatings Science (4+1) masters student, Kyle Hoff (Materials Engineering with a minor in Entrepreneurship), who are joining the Hamachi Group for fall quarter research. We are excited to have you both join the team.

In recognition of everyone’s hard work this summer and contributions to the research group, we celebrated the end of summer research this year with a Taco Tuesday and ice cream! What a tasty treat!

Dr. Leslie Hamachi accepts a tenure track assistant professor position at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in the Chemistry and Biochemistry department, starting in September 2020. California here we come!
